COMPARISON OF ADJECTIVES

FORMING THE COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE

Number of syllables Comparative Superlative
one syllable + -er + -est

one syllable with the spelling consonant + single vowel + consonant: double the final consonant:

If you are not sure, use MORE + OR MOST +
Note: Adjectives ending in '-y' like happy, pretty, busy, sunny, lucky etc:. replace the -y with -ier or -iest in the comparative and superlative form

IRREGULAR COMPARATIVES AND SUPERLATIVES

These adjectives have completely irregular comparative and superlative forms:

 COMPARISON OF ADJECTIVES

THE + SUPERLATIVE

'the' is placed before the superlative:
For example:
  • He is the richest man in the world.
  • That is the biggest crocodile I have ever seen.
  • She is the tallest girl in her class.

 COMPARISON OF ADJECTIVES

COMPARATIVE + THAN

To compare the difference between two people, things or events.
Examples:
  • Mt. Everest is higher than Mt. Blanc.
  • Thailand is sunnier than Norway.
  • A car is more expensive than a bicycle.
  • Albert is more intelligent than Arthur.

    Fill in the blanks with a comparative or a superlative :
a.    Canada is (big) ________than the USA but China is (populous) ________country in the world.  | b. We stayed at (cheap) ________ hotel in the town but my cousin’s campsite was (cheap) ________ than our hotel. | c.
